But these were just feeble attempts to cover up the glaring reality that subscribers were left pretty much on their own to brute-force their way through even the most basic tasks.

Craig and Melody heard that all too often from companies they were paying to provide these services. But they couldn't let that stop them; they had business plans to fulfill and customers to satisfy.
So they became experts at chaining together multiple software products and databases to support their marketing campaigns and the needs of their customers. They also spent MANY long hours manually forcing systems to work - and learning more about databases and the technical world than they ever intended. All the while they kept thinking "There MUST be a better system out there." Sadly, there wasn't.
